Card game about nature - Biodio

▪ General information

Biodio is a card-based tabletop game for 1 to 6 players, where the goal is to build the most diverse ecosystem possible. Players explore the intricate web of relationships between animals and environments, creating a harmonious whole. Despite the complexity of natural relationships, Biodio is a simple game with an intuitive flow. Each player assembles different environments to create their own ecosystem, gradually filling it with creatures ranging from small ants to the majestic golden eagle. The player with the most diverse and valuable ecosystem at the end wins. Players naturally learn about the relationships between different animals, as well as between animals and their environments, and how everything in nature is interconnected.

A major challenge in designing the game was anchoring complex natural principles into simple and intuitive game mechanics. We chose a card format with a strong visual aspect to help players navigate the game. The basic game principle is built around two types of cards: environment cards representing parts of the landscape found in forest ecosystems, and animal cards illustrating the rich animal diversity in Slovak nature.

▪ History of the origin

We created the game because we live in a time when nature protection is essential. We decided to contribute to the topic through this game. With it, we can naturally teach people how nature works, because we must first understand it in order to appreciate it. The game was consulted with an expert ecologist Erik Baláž.
